St Osmunds Church, Barnes

This was a special artist's commission from the church for an inlaid mosaic panel at the top of the steps at the entrance to the church and part of the church's outside refurbishment work.

The brief was to design and make a modern interpretation of the 1600 year old mosaic found in the The Church of the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes in Tabgha, Israel on the shores of the Sea of Galilee.

I decided to make the mosaic using modern marble tiles, (2cm square and 4mm deep). I carefully selected 14 different tile colours to match as close as possible the ancient marble pieces used to make the original mosaic floor in Tabgha. The size and scale of the mosaic basket of bread and two fish are very close to the ones in the original mosaic -Size: 120 x 210 cm

‘The mosaic was laid on Friday successfully and we are delighted with the artwork. it certainly compliments the exterior of the Church and creates a focal point at the entrance. Thank you so much for preparing this beautiful piece.’ Rev Monsignor Canon James Cronin 10/5/19
